About Me
Gill Boyes B.Ed (Hons), MA in Education
Hello there! Let me introduce myself. I'm a passionate tutor with over two decades of experience, both in the classroom and in personalised one-on-one sessions which are either online or in my home in Wetherby. I specialise in teaching maths and English to students up to year 8.
My approach is all about making learning not just effective, but also enjoyable too! I understand that every student is unique, facing different challenges on their educational journey. That's where I come in! By identifying these barriers and guiding each student through small, achievable steps, I help them to unlock their full potential. I'm here for the difficult times, the giggles and the 'aha' moments, whether we’re catching up, overcoming barriers or gearing up for entrance exams. My years of teaching have given me a deep understanding about how to help students with a range of needs, including those with dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia.
Creating a safe and secure place to learn is extremely important to me, so I am fully insured and hold a current DBS Certificate.

Making Learning More Enjoyable
One-to-One Lessons
After a thorough assessment, students will continue either online or face-to-face. As an experienced tutor, I have built up a wealth of resources to ensure that lessons are both fun and effective, and this applies to my online lessons, too, where I use a wide range of teaching tools and games. Most of my online students use a graphics drawing tablet, making the lessons fully interactive and as close as possible to face-to-face sessions. Weekly feedback to parents/guardians and bespoke homework is provided.
Entrance Exam Preparation
Every year, I provide entrance exam preparation for students who are applying to independent schools, including GSAL, Gateways, Ashville and Harrogate Ladies' College, and I have a 100% success rate for 7+, 8+, 9+, 10+ and 11+ exams.
Students with specific needs
Students have tutoring for a variety of reasons, but often it is because they are below expected levels for their age. Usually, this can be resolved by filling the gaps in their skills and knowledge, but sometimes there are other barriers to their learning. I specialise in identifying these and creating a learning programme that includes the small steps they need, as well as using the appropriate resources that will help them to progress. For example, in maths, visual aids and apparatus are an integral part of my teaching, and in English, personalised and scaffolded resources help to support learning.
